Dermabrasion
What is dermabrasion?Dermabrasion is a treatment that allows the skin irregularity to be improved by removing its outer layer, thus making the skin smoother and more regular.By dermabrasion, it is also possible to correct the most superficial scars and wrinkles of the face and around the lips, as well as to improve the post-acneic scars, even though no treatment can eliminate them completely. Are there age limits to undergo dermabrasion? No. There are no age limits to undergo this kind of treatment. What factors does the success of dermabrasion depend on?The variables that influence the success of dermabrasion are multiple: in general, fair-complexioned individuals are more likely to get good results than dark-complexioned, Asian and African individuals. Moreover, in certain areas of the body, scars tend to be constitutionally more evident, such as in the thoracic region, behind the ears and on the shoulders. What surgical operations can be performed together with dermabrasion?Dermabrasion can be performed alone or in association with other surgical techniques such as face-lift, peelings, fillers or other treatments of cosmetic medicine and surgery. What are the risks and the complications of this treatment?Dermabrasion is a rather simple surgical procedure. When this treatment is performed by a specialist in plastic surgery, the results are usually very good. However, it is a real surgical procedure whose complications (bleeding, infection, hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation) are rare but may occur. In order to reduce the risks of complications, it is anyhow essential to follow the advice and the instructions given by the surgeon carefully before and after the operation.
What kind of anaesthetic is given?Dermabrasion is normally performed under local anaesthesia and in outpatient care.If the area to be treated is particularly large (e.g. dermabrasion on the whole face), general anaesthetic and, hence, one day hospitalization may be needed. How long is the dermabrasion treatment? The duration of the treatment varies depending on the width of the area concerned and ends with an occlusive dressing that will be removed after 4-7 days. What instructions are to be followed after the dermabrasion treatment? In order to achieve the best possible result, it is essential that, after the operation, you carefully follow all the instructions that the surgeon will give you from time to time. After the treatment, it is advisable to use a highly protective sun cream and avoid sunbathing for a few months. The resumption of your normal activities is strictly dependent on the kind of treatment you have undergone. What kind of result can be achieved by dermabrasion? The cosmetic result varies with the reaction of the individual and is influenced by several factors (the kind of complexion, the area of the body, etc.).Anyway, the result is permanent and will be completely achieved about six months after the treatment.
